Worshipful Master G.W.Mitchell

Mr George William Mitchell, a well known local gentleman, son of the late Mr William Henry Mitchell (of the firm of Ellison and Mitchell, Kilnhurst) and of Mrs J.E. Drabble, Sheffield, for many years resident in the Swinton district, has reached another milestone in a remarkably distinguished Masonic career.

He was born in 1874, and came to Swinton as an infant. He married in 1897, Miss Waddington, daughter of the late Mr Edward Waddington, of Mexborough, glass bottle manufacturer, and in 1901 left to reside in Sheffield, and ultimately settled in Doncaster.

Mr Mitchell  still has close business and social associations with the district, and is a director of Messrs Elison and Mitchel Ltd, chemical manufacturers, Kilnhurst. He went to Doncaster to develop a branch of the business there.

In 1903 Mr Mitchell joined the St Georges Lodge (242) of freemasons, Doncaster, and subsequently was also an active member of the St Nicholas Lodge (2259) Thorne, and became Worshipful Master of that Lodge in October 1913. Last Friday he had the satisfaction of being installed Worshipful Master of his Mother Lodge – St Georges (242) Doncaster, being the 136th Master of this Ancient Lodge.

In the meantime, however, Mr Mitchell has taken advanced degrees in Freemasonry. He was made Worshipful Master of the Danum Lodge of Mark Master Masons. In February of the present year, Mr Mitchell reached a very considerable eminence in Freemasonry, being exalted Most Excellent of the St Magdalen Chapter of Royal Arch Masons (242) Doncaster.

He has the honour of holding a somewhat unique position in Masonry in that he is M.E. of the Royal Arch Chapter, and Worshipful Master of St George’s Lodge, both of Doncaster, in the same year.
