Tennis Club Losses

Frank Callear (17), a haulage hand, of Thomas Street Kilnhurst, and Leslie Taylor (16), haulage hand, of Melton Hill, High Melton, were summoned at Rotherham West Riding Police Court on Monday with having stolen 16 tennis balls and a pair of tennis shoes, valued at £1 2s 6d., between September 30, 1927, and April 16, 1928, the property of the Kiinhurst Tennis Club.

Each defendant was fined 25s.

It was stated that when the season closed last year the articles were locked in the pavilion, and when the season opened again in April the balls and shoes were missing.

Sergeant Horne said that he saw the defendants at 6 p.m. on August 3rd, and told them of the theft and they both denied the offence.

They later admitted the theft’ of the balls, and said they had lost them playing cricket.

They denied stealing the shoes

Defendants said they had nothing to say in answer to the charge.
