The South Yorkshire Collieries and the Hull Coal Trade in 1881

The annual return relating to the quantity of coal sent from the South Yorkshire Collieries to Hull during 1881, has been awaited with considerable interest by coalowners and others, owing to the alteration of the grouping system.

As was expected, the changes have disturbed the trade, Denaby Main Colliery having a large increase, whilst Manvers Main, Corton Wood, Darfield Main, Lundhill, and other pits have a marked falling off.

Taken, however, as a whole, the return may be said to be a favourable one, the mild weather having favoured and extended shipping operations to the end of the year. The quantity sent by water, owing to the mild weather during December, was 50,904 tons, and 52,533 by rails, giving a total of 103,437 tons, against 93,465 last year.

The tonnage sent during the last twelve months amounted to 1,266,790 tons, or an increase of 86,790 tons over what was supplied in 1880.

Possessing enormous advantages with regard to situation and rates, the Denaby Main Company heads the list, having sent no less than 127,632 tons, against 115,794 last year, of which the large tonnage of 12,512 tons was forwarded in the last month of the year.

The West Riding Silkstone Collieries stand second, having supplied 112,941, or less by 14,832 tons than in the year 1880.

Manvers Main Colliery, which is situate about a couple of miles from Denaby, sent 52,161 tons last year, which also exhibited a falling off to the extent of 2,129 tons as compared with the previous year.

Allerton Bywater Colliery, in the West Riding, last year supplied 97,040, against only 55,153 tons in 1880.

Corton Wood showed a falling off, having sent 16,712, against 21,041 last year; but Carlton Main, a large new colliery on the Midland, raising a capital coal, sent 28,920, against 21,010.

The Darfield Main return shows 4,376, against 11,268 in the previous year.

The Elsecar pits supplied 41,942, in comparison with 29,915.

Houghton Main supplied 15,618, as compared with 3,508.

Kilnhurst, 12,968, against 14,754.

Lundhill, 15,472, against 24,814.

Mount Osborne, 6,652, against 10,532.

Monkton Main, 12,397, against 11,356.

The Oaks, only 164, against 9,336 last year.

Rockingham, 868, against 2,512.

Swaithe, 11,664, against 12,577.

Thrybergh Hall, 42,132, against 42,738.

Wombwell Main, 14,228, against 14,632.

Wath Main, 11,869, against 730 tons.
