Harvey’s Five
Unhappy incidents at Piccadilly

Piccadilly 3  Kilnhurst 5

Great interest was taken in the second attempt of the teams, at Piccadilly on the day, to decide which should go into the next round. The excitement, however, proved too much for the players and three of them were ordered off the field.

The game started at a great pace, and Piccadilly were one up inside five minutes. Hanson and Hysen did the work and Dawson put the finishing touch. The Piccadilly defence had a lively spell after that but Piccadilly were the next scorers. Dawson again did the trick, and Piccadilly were two up inside 20 minutes. Piccadilly had the better of play for a time and there was some tussle between their forwards and the Kilnhurst halves. The score remained unchanged at the interval.

Both offences were quickly tested in the second half and Russell in particular made some clever saves. Hyson scored Piccadilly’s third goal. From that point the play fell. Piccadilly had the game in their hands but Kilnhurst began to get rattled. The referee had given a caution or two.

Harvey at last got through for Kilner’s after 70 minutes. A tussle between while, but Piccadilly goalkeeper and Littlewood, a Kilnhurst forward ended up in blows. Both players were sent off the field. The incident upset Piccadilly and in five more minutes Harvey reduced their lead to a single goal.

The teams played hard and it was not till three minutes of the game was left that Harvey completed his hat-trick.

Extra time was played and though Piccadilly set up a bombardment of the Kilnhurst goal they were knocked back and Harvey went through to score his fourth and turn the tables completely. Before the end of the first 15 minutes the irrepressible forwards got his fifth goal.

With 12 minutes to go the game was stopped altogether. There was a scramble in the Kilnhurst goal with the goalkeeper lying on the ball and and Piccadilly claimed it had gone over the line. The referee refused to allow a goal and Willoughby disputed the referee so hotly that he too was ordered off. He refused to go and the referee thereupon abandoned the game.

A quite good game, full of excitement and spoiled by the players losing their calm. Piccadilly suffered the more by allowing it to shell, for they had the game in hand when the first incident occurred.

Harvey was the best forward on the field. His five goals made a notable achievement
