Passing By
Mr. H. P. Bower, the very able engineer who is leaving Kilnhurst after re-modelling the machinery of the colliery there, deserves the kind tokens and expressions bestowed upon him by his comrades and neighbours at his departure.
He has been at Kilnhurst ten years, a short enough period as local associations go, but unusually long for him; he tells us that had never previously stayed anywhere more than two years. The rolling stone gathers no moss, but what’s good of moss? It is the rover, the man of wide and diverse experience, who rises rapidly to-day.
What I like about Mr. Bower is that though absorbed in difficult and exacting professional duties he found time to take an interest in the village, and by personal service and influence, to improve and brighten it. Yet Kilnhurst was nothing to him ten years ago, and is now only a memory, though, we hope a pleasant one.
There is a moral in this for those of us who are indigenous to the soil.
