Obituary – Frederick Hinchcliffe – Ship Hotel Licensee

Mr Frederick Hinchliffe, who represents the third generation of one family to hold the licence of the Ship Hotel, Kilnhurst, died yesterday morning. He was 75.

Hinchliffe’s mother and stepfather “kept” the house before him and earlier his grandfather and grandmother were licensees.

Mr. Hinchliffe himself took over the licence at the age of 21 and during nearly 37 years’ occupancy of the position he has been a prominent figure in the Sheffield and             Rotherham Licensed Victuallers’ Association. He was a member of the committee for over 36 years and for the last five years president of the Country Districts of the Association. In his youth Mr. Hinchliffe was a well-known figure on local sports grounds and won numerous prizes for “tilting the ring” while on horseback. He was a keen follower and member of the Fitzwilliam Hunt.

He had also taken a keen interest in the life of the village and has held official positions with the Kilnhurst football and cricket clubs.

He had been in failing health for about three years, but was not confined to bed until Saturday. He leaves a widow, two sons and two daughters.

One son and one daughter are married and the two sons, Messrs. Fredk. and Harry Hinchlife, are accomplished musicians, the former as organist and pianist and the latter as violinist. The interment will take place at Kilnhurst Church on Sunday at , 3-30.
