February 1939

Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 13 February 1939

Sheffield United 0 Grimsby Town 0 F.A. Cup

Some of the gates were closed just before two o’clock, and at half-past two. there were something like 55,000 in the ground, and more still coming in.

Many Spectators Faint

United and the Police had taken all precautions, and there were well over 100 foot and mounted officers on duty. The ambulance men were very busy, and several spectators who had fainted, were handed out, and by a quarter to three, the Brigade had handled round about 20 patients.

Mrs. F. Holroyd, of 31. Birdwell Road, Kilnhurst, was taken to hospital suffering from broken ribs. Before the start of the match a Grimsby supporter dressed in oilskins, and carrying two large fish over his shoulder, walked round the ground. People were being handed down over the heads of spectators at the Shoreham Street and John Street corner, but everybody forgot about those things when the teams came out.

First Grimsby Town in white shirts and black knickers went to the Bramall Lane goal, and a big cheer for United, who went to the Shoreham Street goal.
