Houses for The Asking

But Slum Dwellers Decline to Move

Thirty new houses which have been vacant at Wharf Road, Kilnhurst, for periods varying from a fortnight to eight weeks will, it is expected, be occupied within the next week or so.

Tenants of property condemned under slum clearance orders at Swinton have objected to their enforced removal to Kilnhurst, the workmen complaining of the expense of travelling to their work and the womenfolk complaining of shopping inconvenience.

From two districts. Chapel Hill and William Street, tenants presented petitions to the Council protesting against their proposed transfer to Kilnhurst and declined to apply for keys for the new houses when invited to do so.

The Council were forced to build new houses at Kilnhurst. Mr. E. Adams, sanitary inspector, said yesterday that now the building scheme had been completed, the Council had allocated houses to the families displaced and the distribution of keys would be made next week
