Hit by School Cuts

Government cuts in spending on new schools has meant that a “desperately needed” new primary school at Morley Place, Conisbrough, will not now be built next year, the Divisional Education Officer, Mr. P. M. R. Timothy, said on Wednesday.

The Government have slashed a total of £4,000,000 in school spending in the West Riding, but, in the Mexborough Division, only one school has been deleted from the list of four which were scheduled for the County programme for next year.

“We are very disturbed by this loss,” said Mr. Timothy. The Divisional Education Executive have yet to receive a report on this matter, hut I feel they will be deeply dismayed and much concerned.

“This school is desperately needed, and it is disturbing that it is not to be reprogrammed. It was to have been built this year, and we are certainly expecting that it will be included in the following year’s programme.”

Unaffected

Unaffected by the cuts are the new one form entry primary school to be built at Clayton Lane, Thurnscoe, at a cost of £77,446; a new primary school to be built off Brookfield Avenue, Swinton, for £80,741; and a new primary school to be built at Piccadilly, Swinton, for £80,741.

Also unaffected is the new Kilnhurst Church of England School, work on which has already been started
