“Golden” in Canada for former Kilnhurst couple

Congratulations and gifts from relatives and friends in the district to Canada recently to King Edward Street, Glace Bay, where Mr and Mrs John Gladwin, a former Kilnhurst and Swinton couple, have celebrated 50 years of happy married life.

A niece Mrs Hawroft, of 8, Highthorne, Kilnhurst received this week a photograph of the happy occasion, which shows Mr and Mrs Gladwin cutting their Golden wedding cake at a family party.

Mrs Hawcroft is niece of Mrs Gladwin (70), who will be remembered by many old Swintonians as Rose Cory, of Swinton. Dick Cory, is a nephew of Mrs Gladwin and many other relatives still live in the Kilnhurst district.

Mr Gladwin (69), left England just over 50 years ago to seek work in Nova Scotia, and later he was joined by Miss Cory. They were married at St Marys Anglican Church in Glace Bay.

They have one unmarried daughter, Violet. Other relatives have emigrated to Canada.

Although the couple are being left England over 50 years, they look forward every week to receiving the “South Yorkshire Times” to read all about their hometown and friends. They were pleased to read of the Golden Wedding in the announcement columns recently.
