Express Imperilled By Lost Tyre

Pulled Up by Hull Driver in South Yorkshire

Passing through the village station of Kilnhurst, near Mexborough, yesterday, the Liverpool-Hull L.N.E.R. express was pulled up by the driver, W. Ford, of Hull, in time to prevent a serious accident, when a tyre flew off the engine trailer wheel.

Fortunately, there was no one near the foot crossing at the station when the heavy metal tyre flew through the air; it also narrowly missed a stationary goods engine.

The driver applied his brakes immediately. The engine wobbled precariously, and tore up a number of sleepers, but kept to the metals, and was pulled up 200 yards ahead. The permanent way was slightly damaged.

The coaches were attached to another engine and the train continued its Journey over an hour late.
