Earl’s Gift to Kilnhurst
Churchyard Extension Consecrated

Yesterday afternoon the Bishop of Sheffield consecrated the extension of the Kilnhurst Churchyard, which was the gift of Earl Fitzwilliam, and consisted of an acre of land contiguous to the present churchyard of St Thomas’s, Kilnhurst.

The service was fully choral. In addition to the Bishop there were present the Rev WH F Bateman (vicar of Mexborough and Rural Dean) and the Rev F.A.Bromley (Vicar of Kilnhurst).

The churchwardens, Messrs E Kettle and Palfryman, led the procession round the ground, while the choir sang “Brief life is here our portion.”

The deed of conveyance was signed on the ground by the Bishop of Sheffield, who subsequently spoke a few words in church relative to the value of the gift.
