Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Tuesday 15 January 1929

300 miners involved.

Closing of Swinton Common Colliery.

Kilnhurst and Swinton miners, numbering about 300, were temporarily thrown out employment yesterday by the permanent closing of Swinton Common Colliery, owned by Messrs Stewart and Lloyds limited.

This step has been necessitated by bad trade and other circumstances. but fortunately for the miners involved about 100 of them will be almost immediately re-engaged at the Kilnhurst Colliery all the same ownership and most of the others absorbed there as quickly as circumstances allow. At Kilnhurst Colliery last year there was a reduction of the hands employed and the pit resorted to single shift working, but with the coming augmentation of men for the Swinton pit, the Kilnhurst colliery will shortly resume the double shift system.
