Canal Lock re Conditioning

Two interesting photographs of a comparatively rare engineering operation, the reconditioning of a canal lock, which has recently taken place at Kilnhurst near the works of Messrs John Baker and Co Ltd.

This lock was laid down 150 years ago, and the masonry is still in quite good condition.

The gates have been renewed after been in use for 50 years.

The upper photograph shows the men working in the lot with the water dammed back, and the lower photograph shows one of the new lock gates being lowered into position.

These gates, which are made at Thorne, weigh five tons each. The repair of the lock will  occupy over a week, and this section of the canal was reopened for traffic on Wednesday.
