By-election at Swinton

Swinton and Kilnhurst electors will tomorrow (Saturday) have the opportunity of voting at a Council electionfor the first time for many years: when they will choose a County Council representative at a by-election, caused by the re-election of County Coun. M. Creighton to the Aldermanic Bench.

The candidates in tomorrow’s election are Coun. Albert Newsham (Labour) former County Council representative, and Mr. George Henry Telford (Citizens).

Polling will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and the count will be made at the Library.

Mr. Telford, a mechanical fitter, is employed at the Park Gate Iron and Steel Works, and is an AEU steward. He is married and has one son and lives at 11, Twyford Close, Swinton.

Mr Telford has been a Citizens Association member since the Association was inaugurated nearly 3 years ago. He has contested Swinton Urban Council election on two occasions.

Councillor Newsome (48) of 39, Birdwell Road, Kilnhurst was first was elected to Swinton Urban Council in 1952 and has been Chairman of the Water Committee; Building and Highways Committee and for the past three years, Chairman of the Finance Committee.

He is at present Chairman of the Council. He has been a member of Mexborough A.E.U for many years and Chairman of Swinton and Kilnhurst Labour Party for 12 years.
