Kilnhurst Boat Hauler Explains His Rank.”
Two Kilnhurst boat-haulers, Thomas Henry Hassell and Arnold Shaw, were each fined 40s Doncaster yesterday for working a horse in unfit state at Mexborough.
It was stated that the horse was seen pulling barge while suffering from a large wound on the shoulder.
The magistrates’ clerk (Mr. E. W. Pettifor): Where is the captain of the boat ?
Shaw: Away.
Where is the first mate ?— ‘Away.
What are you?—l am a “hoss” marine. (Laughter.)
Mr. Pettifor (to the presiding magistrate): You have heard of the horse marines, sir. Now you see one
