70 Years Old and still Hale and Hearty

Mr. W. White, of 30, Thomas Street, has served in four wars and is still hale and hearty.

He is 70 years of age and began his career as a soldier in the Zulu War, following this experience with campaigning in the Egyptian War. He later served in the Boer War, and had a year’s service during the Great War.

Mr. White’s war experiences vary from dodging the bullets of wily Boer snipers to being machine-gunned by an aeroplane during the Great War. He was one of the first British soldiers to land in Egypt during the Egyptian War and was awarded the Khedive’s medal and star for an important night march.

“We had some rough times in those days,” said Mr. White to a “Times” reporter. “At one place the Egyptians had to chain their gunners to the guns.” Comparing the wars of the last century with modern warfare, Mr. White remarked, “There was more discipline in the old times, but war is so terrible now that discipline seems to be less rigorous than it was.”

One of Mr. White’s recollections of the Great War was that he saw King George V. during the late King’s visit to France during hostilities.
