Sheffield Independent – Thursday 11 August 1870
The children, teachers, and friends connected with the United Methodist Free Church Sunday School, Kilnhurst, had their annual treat yesterday in a field kindly lent to them by Mr. Askwith, farmer.
They met at three o’clock, and after several games at ball, they were supplied with tea and plum cake. They were also, through the liberality of Mr. Goodinson, supplied with a quantity of apples, &c, after which they again indulged in several games.
We are sorry to add, that while some of the teachers were playing a game at cricket, one of them named John Bamford, met with an accident. He was trying to catch a ball .thrown by one of the boys, when it hit his hand, breaking one of his fingers. He was immediately sent off to Swinton for medical aid.
