Swinton Beaten In Derby Final

Challenge Cup Goes to Kilnhurst

Swinton Athletic, who were toppled by Kilnhurst Colliery in the quarter-finals of the Rawmarsh Challenge Cup, never looked like returning the compliment when they met their neighbours in the Mexborough Challenge Cup final on Saturday.

Kilnhurst, who won 4-2. held the whip-hand throughout.

Centre-forward Peter Eccles scored his 34th goal this season when he put Kilnhurst in the lead in the 15th minute. A beautiful 20 yards drive by inside right George Frith made it two in the 31st minute.

The Swinton attack lacked the smoothness of the Kilnhurst forwards, who broke through time after time to punish indifferent covering by the Swinton defence. Poor finishing lost Swinton several great opportunities in the early 1 minutes.

Quick thinking by right-half Syd Jackson gave Swinton their first goal in the 31st minute. To the surprise of the Kiinhurst ‘keeper he flick-headed in the ball from a corner.

Shortly before half time a Swinton attacker appeared to trip over ‘keeper Dungworth. The decision of referee, Mr. Horace Vickers, to award a penalty brought cries of indignation from many of the 800 strong Hampden Road crowd.

Dungworth stood no chance with Frank Senior’s shot.

Kilnhurst attacked like tigers after the resumption and both their second half goals came in the early minutes, Cobb (left-half) converting from 10 yards in the 60th minute and Frith a few minutes later. Both teams came near to scoring in the later stages but during the dying minutes Kilnhurst were content to try and keep play in the Swinton half.

A member of Mexborough F.A., Mr. F. Calladine presented the Challenge Cup.
