South Yorkshire Collieries and Hull.

The amount of trade done with Hull during the last month by the Yorkshire collieries, despite the depression which has pervaded the trade, was very fair considering the period of the year. During the first quarter of the year 280,752 tons were sent, as against 277,604 tons in the corresponding period of last year; there was, however, a decrease of 6,376 tons in the month. There was in the quarter a decrease of 7,000 tons in the quantity exported—namely 83,606 tons as against 90,617 tons last year.

The South Yorkshire collieries have contributed very fairly to the quantity sent. One pit—Denaby Main—sent only 10,912 tons, as compared with 16,056 last year, but Cortonwood sent 2,944, against 1,272 tons; Darfield Main, 1,248 tons against 368 tons; Elsecar Collieries, 4,144 tons against 3,096 last year; Hoyland Silkstone, 1,027 tons against 240 tons; Kilnhurst, 1,320 against 1,208; Lundhill, 2,400 against 1,584; Manvers Main, 6,492 against 3,944; Monckton Main, 1,584 against 1,152; Roundwood, 2,200 against 2,096 tons.

There were decreases, however, in the case of Carlton Main, which sent 1,104 tons, against 2,680 tons last year; Houghton Main, 408 tons against 1,536 tons; Mitchell Main, 1,088 tons against 3,368 tons; Monk Bretton, 1,208 against 2,808; Thrybergh Hall, 3,056 against 3,200; Tankersley, 704 tons against 2,384 tons; Wharncliffe Silkstone, 3,296 tons against 3,512; Wombwell Main, 240 against 1,720; Wharncliffe Carlton, 472 tons against 552; and Wath Main with 560 against 840 tons.
