Soldier – Newton, John – Officially Dead

Mrs. Newton, 109, Meadow View, has been officially notified that her husband, Spr. John Newton, R.E. died of wounds received in action in the Middle East on March 19th. He was severely wounded in a mine explosion, and died in hospital the following day.

Spr. Newton, who was 28, had been in the Middle East a year, and was a native of Wakefield, where he was employed as a plumber before joining the Forces three years ago.

He saw service in France, and came through Dunkirk. His wife was formerly Miss Phyllis Madden, daughter of Mr. J. and the late Mrs Madden.

They have two little girls, the younger of whom Spr. Newton has never seen.
