Private Joseph Lockwood (York and Lancaster, Hallamshires)
Private Lockwood enlisted January 1915 and went to France in June 1915.
In October 1915, he was wounded in the head, which damaged the drum of his left ear, so that he is completely deaf in that ear. He was in hospital about 13 weeks, and was then drafted back to the fighting line.
He was in the attack on July 2, and had not gone above 10 yards over the parapet when he and five more were wounded with some shrapnel bursting. Private Lockwood has a piece of shrapnel embedded in his left ear and is lying in Lincoln Northern hospital awaiting an operation.
