Mexborough and Swinton Times June 23, 1917
Private E Kirby
(6th York and Lancaster)
is now in hospital at Billinge, near Wigan, suffering from an internal wound.
He enlisted in November 1914, and went with the contingent that landed at Sulva Bay. He stayed out there for 30 months, and then was drafted to France.
Whilst at Sulva, under shellfire, he picked up a Kilnhurst soldier, Private W Russell, who was badly wounded, under shellfire and brought him safe to the lines.
He was invalided home in May, this year, and is progressing favourably.
