Sheffield Association Challenge Cup – second round
Rotherham 89 for 6 Kilnhurst 88
Syddall 26 John Morton 35; Rev W Law 4 wkts
This match was played at Rotherham on Saturday before about 500 spectators, and produced some very interesting cricket.
Every phase of the game was watched with keen delight, and the onlookers were not slow to appreciate and applaud good fielding and batting on the part of the players. Splendid catches by J Aizlewood and H Siddall provoked cheers, but when the Reverend W law (former county player) went on to bowl, and obtained three wickets of the first three balls he sent up, the enthusiasm was tremendous.
The game was somewhat irregular, Kilnhurst, who batted first, had a score of 68 at the fall of the second wicket – due to the stands made by John Morton, F. Carr and A. Russell, each of whom showed good cricket. After Morton was got rid of, the rest cut up badly, and the whole side was out for 88, the last six wickets falling for three runs.
Rotherham had three wickets down for 13, but Siddall and A.E. Hazlewood carried the score to 52 before they were parted. Syddall been out from a miss hit after playing faultlessly. Stanley also batted well and, assisted by the Reverend W law, rubbed off the runs at 6.15. Rotherham thus winning by four wickets.
