Praise for W.V.S. From Swinton U.D.C Chairman

At a short meeting of Swinton Urban District Council on Wednesday, the chairman of the Council, Coun. G. Palmer, paid tribute to all those who had assisted in making preparations for evacuees, and said a small number might be expected at some future date. He added a special word of praise for the W.V.S., who had given invaluable assistance.

The Surveyor reported that during the month 11,049,000 gallons of water had been pumped into the mains, and this equalled a consumption of 25.4 gallons per head. The Sanitary Inspector reported that £39 0s. 5d. had been raised by sale of salvage during the month.

A letter from the Clerk to Swinton Education Committee, requesting that the Council notify him of their two representatives to serve on the Swinton Youth Council, as soon as possible, was read, and Couns. G. Hudson and W. O. Turton were appointed.

A suggestion by the Council that the 3.45 p.m. bus from Kilnhurst should go to Swinton via Piccadilly, is receiving the attention of the Mexborough and Swinton Traction Company.

The Chairman read a letter from the Regional Commissioner for Civil Defence’s Office which stated that the office was now prepared to relax fire-watching duty in business premises, and instead of doing 24 hour duty on such premises fire-watchers need only be on duty half an hour before black-out to the end of black-out.
