Obscene language:

James Whittaker, Boatman, was summoned for having used obscene language at Kilnhurst on the fourth instant.

The magistrates imposed a fine of 3S and costs or seven days in default.

Gambling at West Melton

Samuel Rothery, miner, John Winstanley, trammer, and Alfred Tunney, miner of West Melton, were each summoned for gaming with coins on the fifth inst.

Police constable Hydes proved seeing all the defendants gaming with coins.

Major Hammond (superintendent of police), stated that Rothery had been convicted on four previous occasions; Winstanley five times before, and 21.

Rothery and Winstanley were fined 10s and costs and Tunney 5s and costs.
