Obituary – Mr T Palfreyman
The death occurred on April 1st of Mr. Thomas Palfreyman (89), of 115, Victoria Street, Kilnhurst, formerly secretary of the Kilnhurst Co-operative Society. He would have been 90 had he lived until June 21st.
Mr. Palfreyman came to the district from Sheffield at the age of 15 and in 1868 became an apprentice to Messrs. Smith and Guest, timber merchants, Swinton. He was connected with the Thrybergh Hall Colliery for many years and in 1874 left Swinton to live at Kilnhurst.
Mr. Palfreyman had been connected with Kilnhurst Co-operative Society for 48 years, first as a committee man for five years, and for 15 years as assistant secretary. He was permanent secretary for 28 years, and retired a few years ago. When he first joined the Society there were about 190 members, and at the time of his retirement there were over 3000.
Mr. and Mrs. Palfreyman were for 50 years prominent members of Kilnhurst Parish Church, and at different times Mr. Palfreyman served as a sidesman and churchwarden. For 50 years he was a manager of Kilnhurst National Schools from which capacity he retired in 1925. He and his wife, who died several years ago, celebrated their Golden Wedding in November, 1926.
The funeral took place at Kilnhurst on Saturday, following a service at the Parish Church, conducted by the Rev. B. Wright.
