Moving ‘Home
An association which began nearly a century and a half ago ended on Wednesday, when 120 pupils left Kilnhurst Church of England School’s main street building for the last time.
The school has been transferred to a brand new £75,000 building on Meadow View Road, Kilnhurst.
The pupils were given a premature half term holiday yesterday and today (Friday) in order that the Headmistress, Mrs. E. Phillips, and her staff could transfer stationery, books and equipment to the new premises.
When the school reassembles after the half term break, a week on Monday (February 23rd), the Meadow View premises will have been completely prepared for them.
Kilnhurst Church of England School was established in 1836. In those days it was a play school, consecrated by the Rector of Rawmarsh.
The school then consisted of just one main building, which was also used for religious education and services. A few years later a second separate building was constructed above the original. The school has remained unchanged, except for internal alterations, for over 100 years since then.
The school, in the past, has catered for as many as 160 scholars, although the present number is now no. The new school will cater for more than double the present figure in classes of up to 40.
Pupils made their first visit to the new school on Tuesday, when they took up the last of their personal belongings, a pile of books and writing equipment to start them off on the new term.
The remainder of the furniture and essential items will be transferred today and a furniture removal lorry is to be called in to complete the move.
The new school is fitted with new furniture and accessories and only a handful of the existing fitments will be needed at Meadow View Road.
What is to become of the old school is still not clear. But, for the moment at least it will remain empty for the first time in its long history.
