Montagu Cup Final.
Kilnhurst W.M.C. 3. Sandhill Juniors 3
A Drawn Battle.
Splendid weather conditions, and a crowd of friends and enthusiasts made the final for the Montagu Cup, at Mexborough, last Tuesday, a very happy affair.
Both teams struggled in real holiday spirit. The Sandhill players were all under twenty, and their rapidity contrasted favourably with the rather heavy quality of the Kilnhurst team. The result however, fully justified both team’s strenuous efforts, and the Hospital will profit by another “gate.”
Owing to the treacherous state of the ground. Stringer (Sandhill), was taken off early in the match with a split kneecap. He returned towards the end of the first half. Kilnhurst dominated the play in the first half, and made raid after raid.
After continuous pounding, CHAPPELL opened the score for Kilnhurst.Sandbill at one re-acted and WILDE scored as the result of a fine display of dash and determination.
In the last seconds of the first half, Kilnhurst pressed Again, and GOODBY dribbled the ball home, the goalkeeper (Cooper), having left his charge.
In the second half the vigour and sparkle of the Sandhill team caused Kilnhurst to alter their tactic. Chappell, on one occasion, postponed a shot winch would have probably counted. A beautiful goal was scored by BENNETT for Sandhill, thus putting them on level terms.
Shortly afterwards, WILDE gave them the lead with a low shot. Kilnhurst retaliated at once, and w FRITH with a beautiful ground shot, equalised; the ball glancing into the net from the, post.
To the end, each team, battled hard, but there was no further scoring, and a couple of sporting young teams were heartily cheered as they withdrew to prepare for the next encounter.
