Kilnhurst’s New Bowling Green

May 1932

Mexborough and Swinton Times, May 6th, 1932

Mr. F Stanier, agent of Kilnhurst Collieries and president of the local Welfare Committee, delivering the first wood at the formal opening of Kilnhurst’s new bowling green on Saturday. In the group are included Mr. A. W Gray, manager of the colliery and Mr. P. Johnson, secretary of the Welfare Committee.

The opening gathering on Saturday was presided over by Mr. Harry Browne, president of the Bowls section of the club, who said bowls was one of the oldest games and at Kilnhurst they now had one of the finest greens in the district.  Kilnhurst sportsmen should make the fullest use of it and support the Section.  Mr. Stanier declared the green open and said the Athletic Club now possessed a valuable and necessary addition.  A first-class green has long been desired.  Referring in terms of high praise to the valuable work done by Mr. H. P. Bower for the club, he suggested a letter be sent expressing their appreciation of his unstinted labours.

Mr. A. W Gray complimented the contractors on their work and endorsed the appeal for support.  Mr. Johnson thanked all who had assisted.  Mr. Stanier bowled the first wood in the inter-club match between sides captained by Mr. T. Bishop and Mr. P. Lomas.  After the match teams, officials and friends had tea in the pavilion.
