Kilnhurst Woman Charged.
Jane McEveigh (21), Kilnhurst, was brought up in custody at the Rotherham West Riding Police Court on Monday, on a charge of obtaining by false pretences two black gabardine skirts at Wath, from George Garrett, on Sept. 10th.
Supt. Haynes said there were a number of similar cases against the prisoner, and it was owing to some goods she had taken being seen in a second-hand shop by the prosecutor, George Garrett, that the police had been able to trace her. She had been evading them for a long time.
Since the police got on her track a lot of stolen property had ‘been found to have been pawned at Rawmarsh, where the prisoner was well known. When arrested and charged with the offence on Saturday she said, “If anyone has been using my name I can’t help it; it isn’t me.”
On Sunday, however, she had apparently thought better of it, and had admitted the offence. He asked that she should be remanded in. custody for a week, because there were several other cases against her in the Doncaster Division and Mexboro’, and in the event of her being let out she would at once be arrested by the Doncaster police.
Det.-Officer Shaw said he arrested the prisoner, who denied the offence on Saturday, but on Sunday she began crying and said she was sorry she had lied, and would tell the truth. She admitted the offence, and also confessed to about fifteen other cases.
Some of the goods had been found at a pawnshop and others at her home, and altogether the proceeds of about seven thefts had been recovered.
Prisoner pleaded guilty and was remanded for a week in custody.
