Not From “Muck Wagon.”

Kilnhurst Man’s Defence Fails.

A fine of 15s. was imposed on Thomas Wm. Baker (28), a Kilnhurst miner; at Rotherham West Riding Police Court on Monday, when he was accused of having stolen a quantity of coal, valued 6d., from Messrs. Stewards and Lloyds’ Kilnhurst Colliery, on Jan. 10th,

P.c. Watson said at 10-30 a.m. he saw prisoner walking, along Glasshouse Road, Kilnhurst, carrying some pieces of coal. When witness stopped him, defendant said he had got the coal from a “muck wagon.”

Defendant denied he had taken the coal from the full wagons in the siding, but said he had taken it from a “muck wagon.” The youth who had been with him at the time could not give evidence that day as he was working.

Two previous convictions at Thorne Police Court were proved against Baker—on Dec. 2nd, 1926, he was fined 17s. for the theft of a cycle, and for stealing groceries, on the same date, he was fined 20s.
