A Kilnhurst Man Charged With Embezzlement

Joseph Wilson Hilton, of Kilnhurst, was summoned tor having embezzled the sum of 2s., the property of his master, Mr. Alfred Clarke, photographer, Frederick Street, Rotherham.

Mr. Gichard, who prosecuted, stated that the defendant had been employed by the complainant as canvasser. For his work be received a commission and it was a condition that he should devote the whole of his time to the duties. In January last the complainant found that the defendant had not been accounting for certain moneys, and in consequence a notice was inserted in the newspapers requesting complainant’s customers not to pay money to the defendant in the future.

Defendant sought his master, and expressed regret, the result being that he was allowed to continue his employment. A few weeks ago the complainant ascertained that he had not accounted for several sums, and proceeding were accordingly taken against him. The 2s. named in the charge were received from a customer at Parkgate on March 22. The total amount of the defalcations was about £4, and the sum forgiven on a previous occasion was something like £7.

Clark having given evidence, the magistrates thought the case was one which could not be dealt with summarily.

Mr. Gichard took adjournment for a week.

Defendant handed a paper to the Magistrates’ Clerk, stating that it would show the sum of money due from the prosecutor.
