Kilnhurst  4  Sheffield Club  2 – English Cup Tie

The English Cup tie, postponed from Saturday, the 15th, until Saturday last, owing to the unfavourable weather on the former date, between Sheffield Club and Kilnhurst, was attended by largest number of spectators that have been seen on the field this year at Kilnhurst, and they were rewarded by witnessing one of the pluckiest uphill battles on the part of the home team that they ever played.

Up to within a few minutes of time, the game had for a long while stood two goals to one in favour of the Sheffield Club, and try as the home team would—and try they did—the fates seemed against them equalising, but amidst ringing cheers and throwing of hats in the air and intense excitement, the game was made two goals each, and this was the result when time was called.

The referee decided upon an extra half hour being played, so that a final decision should be arrived at, if possible, and in than five minutes from the re-start Kilnhurst had placed two more goals to their credit. Froggatt scored twice after splendid combined attacks.

The game was carried on fast and furious, and towards the close in semi-darkness, but in the end the home team left the field victors by four goals to their opponents two, a very meritorious victory fought against great odds, the visiting team being very smart in the forwards, their passing at times showing excellent judgment.

Schofield, Froggatt , Hawcroft, Bentham, and Dawson did yeoman service for the homesters, whilst Jubb gave promise of coming back to his old form.

The next round will, l am afraid, put a period to our team’s connection with the cop competition for 1892, although there is a remote possibility that even the great Rotherham team may – looking at the uncertainty of the game—be beaten.

Still that possibility rest in the Rotherham men badly and holding out too cheaply, coupled with Kilnhurst having all the luck.

The shout that would go up if our men were returned in victors will be enough to rend the air, and what a triumph it would be indeed! But as I said before the possibility is almost remote enough to come into the region of the impossible.

Kilnhurst:

Hammond, goal; Froggatt and R. Hawcroft, backs; Dawson, Lobley and Bentham, half backs; B Schofield, Blurton, Dyson, H. Schofield and Jubb, forwards.
