Kilnhurst v. Barnsley St. Peter’s

At Kilnhurst, before a large attendance, Barnsley played the same combination, with one exception, that defeated Mexbro’ the Saturday previous. Kilnhurst only placed in the field a very indifferent eleven, the committee considering it wise to rest some of their best men for their Monday’s encounter with Heeley for the Rotherham Cup.

The Saints commenced operations, but were quickly driven back, and the home team forcing the game received a foul. St. Peter’s defence prevailed. Froggatt coming again shot wide. Still returning to the attack, the homesters had much the best of the play. Hill on one occasion came near scoring with a long fast shot. The Saints now began to awake, and for a time caused the home defence much trouble. A corner was nicely placed, and out of the scrimmage Barnes registered their first point. Play for a time was conducted in midfield, until the Saints broke away, and, obtaining a corner, scored their second point. The homesters now attacked, and Gladwin, a reserve man, showed to decided advantage. Even play was the order, neither team being able to improve their position up to half-time.

On resumption Kilnhurst were the first to become dangerous. Nixon, however, came to the rescue. The homesters then forced the game, obtained a corner, and the visitors’ defence was severely tried. They, however, proved themselves equal to the occasion. The Saints now breaking away made matters rather warm for the home custodian and backs. Hammond cleared his charge several times in quick succession. However, they came again, and succeeded in piercing the home defence for the third time. Play was of somewhat uninteresting character for a time, the visitors showing superiority, and with a long shot Vickers registered another point.
