Drunk at Swinton

June 1878

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 21 June 1878

James Farrell, of Kilnhurst, had been summoned by P.C. Pilmore, for being drunk at Swinton, on the 11th inst.

The officer stated that about one o’clock on Tuesday morning, he heard some one punching at his door. He got out of bed and looked out of the window. He saw the defendant in the street. He had his coat off, and his face was bleeding. He said that he wanted to give his wife in charge as she was disorderly. The officer told him that he had better go home and behave himself better towards her, and then he would have no “bother” with her. The defendant then left, saying that he would go and fetch Sergeant Stringer.

That officer stated that the defendant called up his wife and said that she saw him in a similar state to that described by P.C. Pilmore.

The defendant said that he did not wish to give his wife in charge.

Fined 5s. and costs, or 10 days.
