District Election Surprises
Three Independent Gains at Mexborough
Roman Terrace gets two members
The constitutions of urban and rural councils which have been altered or enlarged by amalgamation under the County Council’s review of areas were decided on Saturday.
Independents gained three seats at Mexborough, to which Roman Terrace now belongs. One of the Independents, Mr. J. T. Lewis, a retired schoolmaster, whose first attempt this was, topped the poll.
Roman Terrace obtained two direct representatives, Mr. J. Kelly and Mr. E. Mason, both of whom were members of Swinton Urban Council. Mr. E. Kemp-Briggs, a third Roman Terrace representative, who was also a member of Swinton Urban Council was not successful.
The constitution of the new Mexborough Council will be 14 Labour and four Independents.
Mr. S Silverwood (Ind.) retained his scat and in in addition to Mr. Lewis, the Independents include Mr. C. C. Bullock and Mr. Mason. Mr. T. W. Whipp (Lab) and Mr. G. W. Bramhan (Lab) retiring members were elected only for two years and one year resprctively.
Mr. F. J. Wilkinson ( Ind) who in 1936 was chairman of Swinton Urban Council, retained his seat on that authority for three years, and there was a new success in the Park Ward in the election for two years of Mr. J. B. Vickers (Ind).
Mr. W. 0. Turton, (Ind) was successful in the Kilnhurst Ward. Mr. E. Vickers, another Independent, also gained a seat in this ward for one year, while Mr. A. Russell (Lab) retained his seat for two years.
The surprise at Swinton was the defeat after 16 years of Mr. W. H. Rix, a Kilnhurst Labour Representative.
