Unexhilarating
Denaby United 1 Kilnhurst Colliery 0
Said a former Denaby United Secretary – manager and player in the closing stages of Denaby F.E.Cup tie with Kilner’s Colliery at Tickhill Square on Saturday:
“I have never seen Denaby in a worse display.” I think the very great majority of the 1700 spectators would agree with him. Denaby won a dismally drab game 1 – 0.
There was very, very few flashes of craft indeed, and not many dashing shots.
Oxborough gave Dungworth, in the Kilnhurst goal, plenty to think about, and once Williams put a grand drive just over the bar, but generally, Denaby missed many chances. It was a one-sided game, but Kilnhurst and a steady defence in Dungworth, who in the first half, saved in grand fashion shots from Oxborough (once) and Dickens (twice).
Schofield scored the only goal of the match, a simple, unexhilarating kind of a goal.
With the wind and the sun behind them, Kilnhurst began the second half in Lively in a fashion, but the spasm lasted only 10 minutes and Denaby resume dictation of the play. Williams, a loan of the Denaby side, and a happy afternoon. His kicking was clean in his clearances sure.
There was little Midland League sides in this game; in fact the match was not Sheffield Association League standard. On Saturday’s showing Denaby are straining their supporters loyalty almost to breaking point
