Daily Training brings Kilnhurst Cross-Country Runner, Aged 18, to Peak Fitness

A successful cross-country runner must attain peak fitness and this, of course, can only come with training and Tony Adams, Mexborough Grammar Schools 18-year-old cross country “star” believes in training hard and often.  Tony, who lives at Station House, Kilnhurst Central, is training every day at the moment.  Lunchtime breaks at the school will not see Tony relaxing. Off he goes on a training run and, on his return, eats sandwiches.

Unbeaten in Two Years

Tony was 15 when he started cross-country running and for the past two years has been unbeaten in Grammar School events. Three weeks ago he ran for Rotherham Harriers in the All-England Youth Championships at Bromwich and came 57th out of a field of 900 runners. And six weeks ago he came 43rd in the Northern Youth Championships

Early this season he came in 7th at the Sheffield and District Youth Championships and 5th in Sheffield and District Boys’ Championships two years ago.  Sundays will see him training on Swinton racecourse.  He believes that plenty of running keeps him fit.

“Recently I have been training every day because I get more runs at this time of the season.”  he explained.

Tony has a string of successes behind him and looks forward to more. Last week he broke the school record in the Inter-House competition and also took tenth place in the Northern School’s cross-country championships at Disley, despite an injury. For the second year running he has been awarded his Northern Schools’ Cross-Country colours.

Tony is also a useful half-miler and miler. He won the youth’s half-mile at Mexborough Sports and the men’s mile at Denaby Sports last year.

What started Tony cross country running?  “My brother started before me and I think that is what set me off.”

“My favour distance is four and a half miles” he said.

Another Mexborough Grammar School boy who has been awarded his Northern Schools’ colours is 17-year-old Peter Elliot, of Swinton.
