Comings and Goings – ‘Tommy’ Thorpe to Northampton
The Barnsley officials continue to make progress in the building up of next season’s team. Considerable disapointment has been occasioned, however by their failure to complete terms with Thorpe, and the consequent decision of the popular custodian to transfer services to Northampton.
When Doncaster Rovers dropped out of the Second Division four seasons ago, Thorpe, who lives at Kilnhurst, began to play for Barnsley, and proved himself a very capable successor to Bob Hewitson. He has, apart from a few short intervals, been the first team custodian ever since..
This “signing on” time, however, he and the directors have been unable to see exactly eye to eye, and on Monday, Thorpe was advertising for an engagement. Later in the day came the news that the Southern league champions had secured him, and thus the connection between Thorpe and Barnsley is severed. Probably Thorpe was himself as reluctant as anybody to bring this about, but of course, a player is entitled to do the best he can for the financial standpoint.
It is said that several Barnsley players will be found in the southern League next season. Silto, for instance has gone to Swindon
