On Friday evening, Mr Walter Holroyd, of Glasshouse Lane, when walking down the lane, heard a splash in the canal and found that a child, Annie Rix, of 5, Glasshouse Lane, who had been playing with other children on the bank, had fallen in.

Holroyd was just in time to catch her as she sank for the third time, and succeed in dragging her to the bank.
