Two Seek a Council Seat

Polling will take place tomorrow (Saturday) to fill the Kilnhurst Ward vacancy on Swinton Urban Council caused by the resignation of Mr. W. Bentham.

The candidates are Mr. J. W. Haythorne (Labour) and Mrs. L. Benton (Unofficial Labour).

Mr. J. W. Haythorne, of 25, Beighton Road, Kilnhurst, has lived in the village all his life, and has worked at the local colliery for 23 years.  He has been a member of the Local Labour Party for four years and has been connected with the Trade Union Movement since commencing work.  He is a committee member of Kilnhurst retired miners’ benevolent fund, chairman of the Local Miners Welfare Scheme and a founder member of the local football club.  He was recently re-elected to the Board of Directors of Kilnhurst Co-operative Society.

Mrs. Lilly Benton, of 24, St. John’s Rd., Swinton, a former resident and social worker in Kilnhurst contests a seat on the Council for the second time.  At Kilnhurst she worked for the Children’s Sports Committee and the Old Peoples Treat Fund. She is mother of eight children and widow of Mr. M. Benton, who was a miner.  She has for many years been a member of Mexborough and Swinton Co-operative Guild, and is at present Publicity Secretary.
