Boy Drowned.
Bathing with two comrades in the Don near Top Wash, Kilnhurst, on Wednesday evening, about 7.30, George Dixon, the eleven-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Dixon, of 21, Hicks Square, Glasshouse Road, was drowned.
Dixon and the other boys, who were about the same age, were swimming across the river and Dixon stayed in the middle, swimming about. His friends returned to the bank, when it was seen that Dixon was in difficulties, and they at once re-entered the water. One of the boys managed to grab Dixon’s hair, but was dragged tinder. When he came up again the second also tried to assist, but as also pulled under and had great difficulty in releasing himself and getting to the bank.
Draggjng, operations were commenced almost immediately, but it was not until ten o’clock that P.c. Watson and two men recovered the body. Crowds lined the banks and assisted in the recovery of the body.
Several fatal accidents have occurred at the same spot; which is dangerous to swimmers.
