Body Recovered from the Canal

After dragging the canal at Swinton for over 12 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday, Swinton police recovered the body of Mr. Thomas Neary (32). 10, Hampden Road, Mexborough. a wages clerk at Messrs Baker and Bessemer, Kilnhurst.

A “South Yorkshire Times” reporter learned on Wednesday that Mr. Neary usually went home on the bus for lunch. On Tuesday he borrowed a friend’s bicycle and went home along the towpath from Kilnhurst to Swinton, a route taken by many of Baker’s employees from the Swinton and Mexborough areas.

Mr. Neary did not reach home and lie was reported missing by his wife. The cycle was recovered from shallow water at the side of the canal on Wednesday and the body was recovered some hours later.

A native of Denaby, Mr. Neary had been employed at Bakers since leaving De La Salle School, Sheffield. He had been married only about a year.
