Former Kilnhurst Resident

After 27 years’ service with the West Riding Police Force, Mr. Thomas E. Mannion, formerly of Mexborough and now residing at 12, Gordon Street, Elland, has retired.

A native of Mexborough, Mr. Mannion spent the earlier years of his life in Kilnhurst, where he attended t h e Kilnhurst Council              School. Eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mannion, Victoria Street, Kilnhurst, Mr Mannion has spent 19 years in Viand (near Huddersfield) as a constable.

He joined the Force in 1922 and was stationed at Woodlands and then for seven years at Goldthorpe.

In 1914 he joined the York and Lancaster Regiment as a regular soldier and served in France, Belgium, Mesopotamia and Persia. He was mentioned in Dispatches, and was a sergeant for four years before coming out after seven and a half years’ service.

A keen sportsman and athlete, Mr Mannion was, in 1929, champion athlete of the 2nd Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, and after joining the police, played cricket for Bolton-on-Dearne in the Yorkshire Council. He has represented the West Riding Police at football, cricket, bowls and golf.  He has won the bowls championship and twenty years ago the golf championship, taking third prize last year.

Mr. Mannion has a sister, Mrs. F Pugh, living at College Road, Rotherham.
