Long Service
Believed to be the only Kilnhurst resident to have served for 25 years in the regular Army, Mr George William Taylor is now a car hire proprietor at 115 Highthorn Road, Kilnhurst.
Mr Taylor joined the Army (Royal Artillery) when he was under age, in 1922. He was then stationed at Aldershot. Not long afterwards he transferred to the Canadian Army and spent several years in Canada.
When he rejoinpd the R.A. he was stationed in India where he spent seven years returning to England in 1936.
One of the first to cross over to France when war was declared, Mr. Taylor was one of the last to leave Dunkirk during the retreat. He then served for two years with the Eighth Army, as a lorry driver. When he returned in September, 1944, he was stationed at Aldershot. From there he went to Exeter where he was put in charge of transport, acting captain.
He was finally invalided out of the service in September, 1947. Mr Taylor, who is a native of South Shields is now wondering what is going to happen to his taxi business in view of the 20 mile limit which has recently been imposed.
