The first Kilnhurst girl to become member of an anti-aircraft battery is Miss Joan Mary Brown, (21), only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Brown of 111, Highthorn Road, Kilnhurst.

Miss Brown, who holds the rank of gunner joined the A.T.S. in July. She volunteered as a driver and then entered an A.A. test, being placed ninth out of over 300 girls. She is now engaged on height and range finding duties.

Born at Swinton, Miss Brown attended Swinton Fitzwilliam School. She kept a hairdressing business in Sheffield, but latterly had been employed at Messrs. Clayton’s (Mexborough). She is a member of Manvers Main Sports Club. Miss Brown is keen on Army life.
