Kilnhurst Record Catch?
What is believed to be a record catch for the fishing match run by Kilnhurst Working Men’s Club, was made by Mr. J. Roper on Sunday.
The match was fished at ‘Dog Dyke’ on Sunday, and Mr. Roper’s catch of 15lbs 7ozs, won him first prize of £4 and a Cup. He also won a prize offered for the heaviest fish, and second and third placings were taken by Mr. G. Coulson (9lbs 8ozs), and Mr. W. Young (3lbs 7½ ozs). Total catch was just over 54 lbs.
Other prizewinners were novices: Mr. J. Mann; peg prizes: Mr. W. Shirley, Mr. C. Gilbert, Mr. C. Bradbury, Mr. Jim Taylor, Mr. F. Roper, Mr. W. Young, and Mr. C. Whitehead; biggest eel; Mr. W. Turton; biggest roach; Mr. F. Edwards; most eels; Mr. E. Burkinshaw; most fish: Mr W. Young; smallest fish; Mr. F. Gilbert, Mr. F. Roper and Mr. J. Mann; hidden weight; (prize given Mrs. E. Taylor): Mr. F. Roper, last eel to be caught; Mr. L. Mellors.
