1860 -1960 – One Hundred Years Progress
Kilnhurst Co-operative Society Limited
Kilnhurst Co-operative Society was founded in the pioneer days of the Co-operative Movement, it was one of the first three such societies to be formed in South Yorkshire. Such of its history as we reproduce in the succeeding pages offers an absorbing picture of enterprise and self-help.
Only 18 years after the original impetus given to the movement at Rochdale, Kilnhurst joined in. The village itself was not large in those days and is little bigger now. But the pioneer spirit was strong. Those who founded the Society, so soundly, and those who have since developed it, can rightly feel that it has played no mean part in the economic, industrial and social life of the district.
It is understandable that the President, Directors and staff of to-day look back with pride and gratitude on the efforts of their predecessors, often unknown and unsung, who made the present prosperous position of the Society’s possible.
In devoting quite a lot of space in this issue to the work and the workers of the last hundred years, we are acknowledging not only their efforts for their own society but also drawing attention to the diligent and tenacious way in which the co-operative movement has been woven into the life of the South Yorkshire industrial areas.
