City Sign Barlow From Pompey
Bert Barlow, the Portsmouth inside forward who played in last season’s Cup Semi-Final at Highbury, has been transferred To Leicester City, and will be in the City Team at Filbert-Street.
He is an inside-left, but can take either inside-forward position, it being on the right flank that he opposed City In the Cup game. He figured in all Portsmouth’s matches of that Cup run.
Negotiations for the move by this experienced player, his third In League football, were completed late last night.
A native of Kilnhurst in Yorkshire, Barlow began his career with Barnsley, whence he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers. He signed for Portsmouth in February. 1939, and two months later was at inside-left in the team which provided the season’s major surprise by beating the Wolves 4-1 at Wembley. Barlow scored one against his old club.
When Portsmouth clashed with Leicester last season he was the one survivor of the 1939 team.
During the war, he was engaged on munitions work, but kept in touch with football and occasionally turned out for Pompey, Just before opposing Leicester he had made his 100th League appearance.
He is 5ft 8in in height, Weighs about 11 st., and is the canny, constructive type.
